Celtic Concert Kicks off Saint Brigid's Summer Series
Saint Brigid's Centre for the Arts and Humanities is kicking off
its summer concert series on July 5th, with Nova Scotian harp
players Ardyth & Jennifer, back by popular demand, teaming up
with local fiddler Matt Pepin.
Ardyth Robinson and Jennifer Wyatt met more than a decade ago at
a traditional Nova Scotia kitchen party and have been performing
together ever since. Bringing their eclectic mix of harps,
vocals, bass, percussion, whistles and original songs to
audiences throughout the Maritime Provinces and into the New
England States they have developed a unique style that combines
elements of traditional music with the influence of jazz and
contemporary songwriting. As they have travelled, their unique
style has earned them critical acclaim within the music community
and an ever-growing fan base in the Maritimes.
Ardyth & Jennifer are wonderful storytellers with a unique sound
that explores the many possibilities of the folk harp. Their
haunting vocal harmonies combine with their two harps to make
their stage presentations into moving, lively journeys.
They will be teaming up with local musician Matt Pepin. The
Canadian traditional music scene got a much-needed shot in the
arm with the arrival of Pepin's CD release Pass It On earlier
this year. Blending traditional musical values with contemporary
attitude, Matt's playing is as invigorating as his compositions,
fresh, edgy, but always tasteful and well within the boundaries
of the music. Born into a musical family in Northern Ontario,
Matt seems to have manifested a life's worth of music to create a
style all his own, blending the Old-time, Quebecois music of his
youth with the Irish, Scottish and Western he has studied
vigorously ever since. Be it in person or on the stereo, Matt
brings freshness and joy to his playing that is infectious.
Saint Brigid's Centre for the Arts and Humanities is an ideal
location to bring these musicians together. Formerly Saint
Brigid's Church, this newest Arts Centre to open in Ottawa has
been bringing old and new together to meet and merge since its
inauguration in the fall of 2007. What better way to celebrate
the continuous and evolving heritage of this historic building
than with music that honors the traditions of Celtic music while
exploring its modern possibilities?
Ardyth and Jennifer and Matt Pepin will be playing at Saint
Brigid's Centre for the Arts and Humanities at 8:00 on Saturday,
July 5th. The doors open at 7:00: tickets are $15, available in
advance at 613-244-7373 or at the door.
