Legendary Canadian folk band- the Irish Rovers - renowned for their ageless appeal and their ability to deliver a rollicking, rousing performance are back at Centrepointe Theatre.
The Irish Rovers story begins in 1963, when 16-year old George Millar and 23-year old Jim Ferguson, recent emigrants from Northern Ireland, meet in Toronto at an Irish function. They sang together until dawn and begin performing as a duo. A year later, George’s cousin, Joe Millar, immigrates to Canada and is recruited the moment he steps off the plane! After performing throughout Ontario, the trio makes its way to Calgary, joining forces with George’s brother, Will Millar. The Irish Rovers then head off to “America” and end up headlining at the Purple Onion in San Francisco for an unprecedented 22 sold-out weeks!
The folk clubs of California became the learning grounds for the young Rovers, and through old-fashioned hard work and a wee bit of Irish luck, they were offered a recording contract with Decca Records, eventually releasing the million-selling single “The Unicorn,” the band’s signature song to this day. Through the 1970s and early 80s, the Irish Rovers brought their magic to television with a weekly series broadcast on CBC. In 1980-81, they soared to the top of the pop and country charts once more with “Wasn’t That a Party”, inspired by one of the band’s infamous post-show parties.
For the past four decades, these international ambassadors of Irish music have charmed and entertained fans around the world, and they continue to delight audiences with their live performances. With three original members still on board, the Irish Rovers are passionate as ever about performing, to the great pleasure of their legions of fans. Like the Unicorn, the Irish Rovers are legendary and magical, and a good time is guaranteed!
