The Ottawa Folk Festival presents an evening with Dervish, on Saturday, February 23, starting at 8 p.m., (doors open at 7:30 p.m.), at the Library and Archives Canada Auditorium, (395 Wellington Street, at Bay).
Dervish is a stellar Irish band consisting of Cathy Jordan (vocals, bodhrán and bones), Tom Morrow (fiddle), Shane Mitchell (accordion), Brian McDonagh (mandola), Liam Kelly (flute and whistles), and Michael Holmes (bouzouki). The band, which started from the simple idea of a group of musicians recording traditional Irish music together for the sheer love of it, has grown to become one of the most important and accomplished bands in Ireland.
Dervish CDs and live performances have been met with enormous critical acclaim from fans, journalists and fellow musicians the world over.
Spanning a myriad of tones and moods, Dervish concerts feature high-energy tunes played with intuition and fluidity, charming songs with lyrics about life and love, and inspiring, beautifully arranged melodies that lift audiences from their seats. All of these elements are drawn together by Cathy Jordan's masterful stage presence. Her between-song stories and her easy interaction with the audience draw people into the music in a way very few performers can achieve.
Advance tickets are $24, and are now on sale at the Ottawa Folklore Centre (1111 Bank Street), and at all CD Warehouse locations (1383 Clyde Avenue, 1717 St. Laurent Boulevard, and 499 Terry Fox Drive). Or you can order tickets by phone from the Ottawa Folk Festival Office at 613-230-8234. Tickets at the door will be $28.
