Twenty Years a-Singing
On March 10, Ottawa’s Finest Kind celebrates their 20th year as Canada’s premier close harmony folk trio with a concert in their home town. Come hear what two decades of singing together sounds like: brilliant harmonies, innovative arrangements, and immaculate performances that range over a vast expanse of repertoire—old ballads and country classics, songs of protest and heartbreak, and hilarious new material from the trio itself.
For twenty years, Ian Robb, Ann Downey, and Shelley Posen have been delighting Canadian, American, and British folk fans with uncannily creative arrangements, sung in tight three-part harmony that has been described as “molecular bonding” and “closer than putty on a window.” Every Finest Kind concert is an assortment of musical surprises. They might jump from an eerie Canadian ballad to a hoary old hymn, then from an old George Jones weeper to a joyful English folksong, followed by a fun parody of itself, then—you get the idea. They accompany themselves on a variety of instruments, or let their voices alone weave a rich, sometimes spine chilling, eminently satisfying audio tapestry.
Finest Kind appears Saturday, March 10, at 7:30 p.m., St. Martin’s Anglican Church, 2120 Prince Charles Road, Ottawa. Tickets are $20, available on line at www.finestkind.ca, and at Compact Music in the Glebe and the Ottawa Folklore Centre.
